Become a Sports Coach

Think back to the time when you were in high school. If you were on a sports team, your coach might have been the coolest person around. Not only did they help you train for the big game, but they may have also by your side for advice and support in other areas. If you have your evenings and weekends free, you can become a coach on the side and serve players in their pursuit of the game.

This side gig doesn’t have particularly great pay, but it’s not that hard to get into either. You just need a passion for sports and the ability to pass a few certifications. Since you’re a fitness authority for students, many high school programs require that you have a rudimentary knowledge of sports medicine, physical education, and exercise science. One way you can get on-the-job training is to substitute coach or work as an assistant coach. The requirements for these positions are often fewer, and they provide great stepping stone knowledge for working as a head coach. We chose this for our Side Hustle Master List because it’s easy for anyone with a passion for sports to get into.

How Much Can You Make?

The average head coach can make anywhere from $20 to $25 per hour. That’s not bad for an evening and weekend job. To make higher wages, it helps if you have a bachelor’s degree in sports, physical therapy, or a related field. Schools will work with you to get certified, but if you have previous certifications (like CPR) that can help. In areas with lots of activity, you’ll most likely be competing against other people for the job. Make sure you have good leadership skills and are able to pass a drug test or background check.
